Riding a motorcycle provides a sense of freedom and allows riders to travel without the hindrance of a car. However, with that freedom comes significant risk. On Monday, July 15, 2024, that risk was tragically highlighted when two fatal motorcycle crashes occurred in Boulder County. Both accidents resulted in the loss of motorcyclists’ lives.
The two crashes happened just hours apart. According to news reports, the first crash occurred on U.S. 36 in Boulder County between Boulder and Lyons, near the intersection of Neva Access Road. The second fatality took place several hours later near U.S. 287 and Isabelle Road. In this second incident, the driver of the vehicle was forced to crawl out of the passenger side window as the car was engulfed in flames.
We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. We also extend heartfelt sympathies to everyone involved in these crashes, including the vehicle drivers, witnesses, and first responders.
Motorcycle Safety: Following the Rules of the Road

Motorcyclists must obey all the same traffic laws as other vehicle drivers. Disregarding traffic signals, illegal passing, speeding, and recklessness can be fatal, especially since motorcyclists lack the protection that cars provide.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), 134 motorcyclists were killed in Colorado in 2023. Speed and alcohol were major contributing factors in these deadly crashes, with nearly 26% of motorcycle fatalities involving an impaired rider.

The rules of the road apply to all motorists. Here are steps drivers can take to protect motorcyclists:
- Check Blind Spots: Always check blind spots for motorcyclists and bicyclists.
- Double Check Before Pulling Out: Ensure the road is clear before entering.
- Avoid Distractions: Never drive while distracted by cell phones, radios, eating, or drinking.
- Give Space: Maintain a safe distance and do not follow motorcyclists too closely.
