This past Saturday, Debbie Taussig, Owner of Debbie Taussig Law, served as a presiding judge for the Student Trial Advocacy Competition (STAC) through the American Association for Justice (AAJ). This event is one of the top trial advocacy competitions in the country, designed to give law students the opportunity to hone their litigation skills in a courtroom setting.

Each year, AAJ hosts regional tournaments across the country, with the top two teams from each region advancing to the National Finals. The winners of the Denver Regional Tournament this year were South Texas College of Law Houston and University of California, Berkeley School of Law. These teams will now compete in Atlanta, GA, from April 3-6 for the national title.

Presiding Over a High-Stakes Wrongful Death Case

The case in this year’s competition was a wrongful death lawsuit, where the decedent was tragically killed after colliding with a disabled tractor-trailer. Throughout the competition, Debbie was impressed by the students’ preparation, advocacy skills, and courtroom presence. They demonstrated sharp legal analysis, persuasive arguments, and a deep understanding of trial procedure—skills that will undoubtedly serve them well in their future legal careers.

The Importance of Trial Advocacy Competitions

Programs like AAJ’s STAC provide invaluable experience for law students. They allow future trial lawyers to refine their ability to think on their feet, argue persuasively, and present compelling cases under pressure. These competitions not only prepare students for real-world litigation but also foster a passion for advocacy and justice.

Congratulations again to the winning teams, and best of luck to all the competitors advancing to the National Finals in Atlanta!
